It’s been a while since I sat down and wrote a post. So, I am not sure where we were last time or what we were doing. So if it’s a repeat I am sorry.
We got to Nebraska the first part of July and only cut a little before the rains hit. We did get to enjoy some time off over the Fourth of July, though. We watched fireworks in Sidney one evening and then had a cookout with the Haken crew another night. The kids all had fun setting of fireworks and the adults enjoyed good conversation!
The wheat in Nebraska was better than Oklahoma and Kansas but still not great. Our farmer suffered some hail damage which brought the yields down.
Our Montana wheat was not quite ready when we finished up in Nebraska, so we took a detour to South Dakota on our first leg of the trip to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The boys had been there before (2016) but they were pretty young so, hopefully, this time they will both remember it. We also snuck in a dinosaur museum and putt putt golf.
We got up the next morning and traveled the rest of the way to Hardin, Montana. Like I said before, the wheat wasn’t ready yet so our farmer took us to the lake!! What a GRAND time we all had. It was so nice to see our boys enjoying a “real” summer activity. We arrived at the lake about 11:30 and stayed until 8:00 that evening. We enjoyed a great lunch prepared by Renea, the boys tubed and Dillon and I skied. Colston tried his hand at skiing and got up a few times but it didn’t last long. Hope to try again another time; he’s so close to figuring it out!
Monday morning we went back for round two. We made it back to Sidney at around 3:00 so we decided to go ahead and take off since we had 5 hours of sunlight left. We made it to Chadron, Nebraska for the night and got to Hardin the next day around 3:00.
We started cutting the next day and cut for only two days and ran into green. However, this gave us some time to see some family. On Friday, we met Dillon’s Uncle John at the Hardin museum and looked through the exhibits of old farm equipment and Indian artifacts. We enjoyed his company and thankful we got in a visit – even if it was a short one!
Saturday, we met Laramie, Dacia and Daisy in Billings for a fun-filled day. We started the day at 9:00 at the Farmer’s Market and then headed off for a late breakfast. We had a Tee time at the par 3 golf course at 11:30 where we played 18 holes. (It’s a smaller golf course so we walked the whole course.)
We finished up there about 3:00 then did some shopping and headed to Fuddruckers for an early supper. Dacia made us reservations at the CSI escape room at 6:30. It is a murder mystery room and you have one hour to find the clues and solve the murder. We were one locked box away from figuring it out but ran out of time! It was SO MUCH FUN!!
We have since finished wheat in the valley and moved up onto the bench. It will take a little over a week to finish it up and then we will be finished here in Hardin.
Hard to believe that summer has flown by so quickly. The boys will be starting school in less than a month.
