Wheat fields never get old!

“It’s a shit show!”

I laughed when my oldest son said that when telling me about taking three kids somewhere or even just letting them loose in the house.  I couldn’t get it out of my head and realized  we all have that in more ways than one.  With growing families, with work and just basically life.

But how do you define shit show? Here’s what I came up with:

S – stuff everywhere
H – have to find the good in it
I – it is what it is
T – tells your story
Show – day-to-day experiences

My last week has been a shit show…I am hoping someone can relate.

I spent time with our baby who had a baby (this was good…very, very good). Then said goodbye to all of our grandkids and family, packed my office and clothes and headed south with a new guy to meet up with Myron and the guys who have been on the harvest since the beginning of  June.

Cole just took a little nap.

It was hard leaving our beautiful grandkids and  even the beautiful green of the farm. I actually saw our wheat grow and head-out for the first time. Rain in southwest North Dakota has been a good thing.

But, alas, the rain, hail and drought in the fields of Oklahoma and Kansas weren’t such good things. It is what it is! We are not in control and I still needed to get there and get to work.

With that being said, packing doesn’t get any quicker or easier with 38 years of experience. There is still stuff everywhere! You can eliminate a lot of things but your office is your office! Thus, stuff everywhere while I was sorting and compiling.

Yep, packed up!

A month on the harvest with two campers is a considerable amount of time without a chief cook and bottlewasher! The crew and Myron kept as busy as they could in some incredible heat.

Upon arrival, my first thought was, “This is a shit show!” I spent a good day and a half cleaning, organizing and filling up the cupboards and fridges in the campers. It truly wasn’t neglect – just sleep, eat, shower, work and repeat. They were tired from the heat and work so when they got into the camper, not much happened.  There was a water heater leak, as well.

I am feeling better about things and even planned my menu! I still need to get my office organized but working on receipts from last month, tickets and laundry keeps me busy enough.

It is good to be back with Myron.  Hence finding the good in things.

The trip itself started out very, very green and just kept getting lighter and stressed. The closer we got to our destination, we saw more and more hailed corn and wheat. But we made it safely and went right to the field.

We are parked in Sharon Springs, Kansas – the northwest corner of the state and not too far from Colorado.

I am excited to start telling our story in pictures which I actually take and the harvest through our crew’s eyes.

Harvest 2018…it is what it is…and ever changing…so many harvesters, as well as farmers, are simply struggling. Not something you will see or hear on the news but I do believe there will be a ripple effect on communities, businesses and families.

Stay tuned to HarvestHER to keep updated!

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

My 4th of July included a free lunch with friends, Jim and, fellow HarvestHER, Tracy Zeorian. They were on their way through Sharon Springs headed to Limon, Colorado to their next job and she texted and said, “Meet us for lunch”. Thanks, Jim, it was a great visit and sandwich!

A beautiful rainbow at 60 miles per hour…I couldn’t get Myron to stop. Not only was it double, the purples were beautiful! Not as good as fellow HarvestHER Laura’s…but close!
