2019 Peanut Harvest

Tonya Land – Jackson County, Florida

Our peanut harvest began earlier in the month and, by all means, looks like it’s going to be a wonderful year. The price of the crop is terribly low, but the quality and weather are fantastic.

We have been very dry and incredibly hot but that’s not always a bad thing. Some of the ground is rock-hard and the boss is going through lots of plow points but it also makes the peanuts pick really clean, which also means the pickers don’t clog up with wet dirt.

The cotton looks just awesome and the soybeans could use some rain to finish them out, but there is no rain in sight.

I have been a bit reluctant to post an update on our harvest because of last year’s devastation from the hurricane. Every farmer we talk with has trepidation over last year’s loss. We are still so amazed at how quickly the crop was taken away.

One day.

Gone.

And the ‘haze’ that hung over everything and everyone is still here. So it has caused a mad rush to plow, to harvest, to…rest.

After a normal year, we have time to relax and reset and plan for the next planting year.

This past year, we had no rest but reconstruction and rebuilding throughout the year.

And so we are grateful for the reprieve that God has blessed us with and are not taking a moment for granted. The sooner the harvest is over, the better!

I have dreams of a morning date with my coffee pot and silence. Just time for reflection.

Until then, it’s all-out mayhem!

And so my thoughts turn to those who are dealing with the aftermath of the bomb cyclone and deluge of rain and flooding that followed. Southern farmers know what you’re going through. After hurricane Michael came through, we got 30 inches of rain in two months. I know you are rebuilding, and I pray for your rest.

May next year be good.
