Our first day of wheat harvest for 2016 was yesterday the 10th of June. This is actually early for us, which might be why when we made our way through a couple fields we found our moisture a tad high for our liking. We started right after lunch and in the first field found the moisture on our combine monitor to be good, then we tested it ourselves, and the first load we headed to town with a sample.
Due to the moisture changing in various areas of this first field, the hubs decided to head to another field for a try there! Unfortunately it had an even higher moisture level! So we headed back to field 1 and cut some more. It was a day of 90 degree weather with high humidity and quite windy. Perfect weather for wheat to turn!
So we will try again tomorrow afternoon. This year we are short a truck driver, my father-in-law. So I found myself in “Bob”, which my daughter named it’s our 1983 Chevy grain truck. I got lots of practice driving it empty! I still need practice when hauling a full load, watch out those in our neck of the woods! Good thing we store the majority of our wheat at the farm!Early this first morning, my daughter and I made a quick trip to a town about 40 minutes away to buy some more food supplies and stuff. I have a menu of meals planned, we’ll see how that plays out! Tomorrow it will be Roast beef sandwiches with peppers, onions, and provolone cheese for one meal!
