Kortney DeBock – CK DeBock Harvesting
I vowed to journal everyday once harvest started, I really did. This just shows how new to the game I really am. A true harvester knows making any sort of plan works out about as well as trying to baptize as cat, while there might be a will there is probably not a way. So I am going to have to play a little catch-up and give you the cliff note version of our first week:
We started our first job the day before Memorial Day, we didn’t even get to cut all day due to a big storm that moved in around dinner time. That big storm was followed by a few more in the following days. We didn’t get back in the field to finish our first job until this last Sunday. Since then we have been working around the clock (literally) to play catch up to get everybody finished before we need to head up to Oklahoma. Right now it is just my husband and I running combine and truck. Our hired help will not be here for another week so for now we are running around like mad men trying to keep up with everything. Luckily it’s been a pretty easy-going harvest.
Casey basically runs combine until truck’s full and I get the call to run combine while he dumps and then he comes back to relieve me while I run all over trying to take care of everything else in the short hour I have before he calls me again. The only time we have off right now is when the grain trailer is filled up and elevator is closed for the night. Which last night was 5:30 am. An hour-long nap in the captain’s chair and it was time to go again! This year we get to start around our home, which has been our only saving grace! It’s been so nice to get to start with all of our neighbors and family, seems to ease you into the next 6 months of craziness! That is all for today! I just got the call that I need to clock back in😉
